(And what happens if your baby is older)

One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents is simple — when should we schedule newborn photos? And almost always, it’s followed by a quiet worry: What if we miss it?

If you’re asking either of those questions, take a deep breath. There is far more flexibility (and beauty) in newborn sessions than the internet often makes it seem.

The “Ideal” Newborn Window (and Why It’s Suggested)

Traditionally, newborn photos are scheduled within the first 7–14 days after birth. During this window, babies tend to be sleepier, curl naturally, and spend more time resting — which allows for those soft, cozy, womb-like images many parents love.

This timeframe can be wonderful, but it’s important to know something: it’s not a rule, and it’s not a deadline.

Your recovery, your baby’s temperament, feeding journeys, and life adjustments matter just as much as any timeline. A calm, supported parent will always create more meaningful images than a rushed session simply to “stay on schedule.”

What If My Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?

This is where I gently reassure parents the most — you did not miss your chance.

Newborn sessions can be beautiful well beyond the first two weeks, and I want you to know you’re in experienced, prepared hands. I am trained and educated in handling newborns throughout their earliest stages of life — whether your baby is 4 days old, 15 days old, or even 35 days old.

I’ve photographed newborns up to 8 weeks old, many of whom slept just as soundly as babies only a few days old. Every baby is different, and age alone does not determine how a session will unfold.

As babies grow, sessions simply shift in focus rather than losing their value. An older newborn may spend more time awake, make eye contact, stretch, yawn, or show early expressions and personality — all of which are incredibly meaningful to document.

These sessions are approached with patience, knowledge, and flexibility. I read your baby’s cues, adjust techniques as needed, and always prioritize comfort and safety.

There is something incredibly special about photographing a baby who is starting to look back at you.

What These Sessions Look Like When Baby Is Older

When babies are past that very early newborn stage, we lean into what they naturally offer. Sessions may include more wrapped moments, more cuddling, more parent connection, and fewer expectations around sleep.

Everything remains gentle and baby-led. Feeding breaks, soothing, and pauses are always welcome — and never rushed.

The goal doesn’t change. We’re still telling the story of your baby’s earliest days, just through a slightly different lens.

Booking Before Baby Arrives (and Why It Helps)

Booking your newborn session before your baby arrives is not only helpful — it’s essential. I strongly recommend reserving your session around 35 weeks of pregnancy.

Because birth is unpredictable and due dates are always tentative, newborn sessions are planned with flexibility rather than fixed dates. Booking early allows me to thoughtfully plan around multiple due dates on my calendar while ensuring each family receives the time, care, and attention they deserve.

To maintain a calm, unrushed experience, I intentionally book only a limited number of newborns each month. This prevents overload and allows room for early arrivals, late arrivals, and everything in between.

When you book during pregnancy, you’re reserving space — not a specific day. Many families choose to reserve their newborn session during pregnancy. This doesn’t lock you into a specific date — it simply places you on my calendar with flexibility built in.

Once your baby arrives, we adjust based on:

Your recovery

Your baby’s needs

How you’re feeling emotionally and physically

This approach removes pressure and allows the session to happen when it truly feels right.

A Gentle Reminder

There is no perfect age for newborn photos — only the season you’re in.

Whether your baby is days old or a few weeks in, your session will be shaped around who they are right now. The images that matter most aren’t defined by a timeline — they’re defined by connection, tenderness, and presence.

If you’re unsure where you fall or worried you’ve waited too long, reach out. I’m always happy to guide you and help you decide what will feel best for your family.

Your baby is already enough. Exactly as they are.
