As a mom of four, and family of 6 believe me when I say it takes some getting used to color coordinating, but once you get the sense of colors, patterns and shades it just clicks. Studio newborn portraits offer a clean, controlled environment where every detail—from lighting to backdrop—is carefully curated. When it comes to styling your family’s outfits, the goal is to keep things simple, timeless, and emotionally connected, allowing your baby to remain the heart of every frame.
1. Stick to Soft, Neutral Tones
Soft palettes like ivory, cream, beige, light gray, blush, or muted earth tones create a calming and cohesive look. These shades reflect light beautifully and help highlight the tenderness of newborn moments without visual distractions.
2. Opt for Comfortable, Textured Pieces
Choose outfits made of natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or knits. Flowy dresses, relaxed button-downs, and cozy sweaters photograph beautifully in studio lighting and add soft dimension to your images.
3. Newborn Outfit Ideas
We'll keep it simple for your baby:
A soft neutral swaddle or wrap
A minimal onesie or romper
Bare skin on a cozy blanket for those timeless, intimate shots
Avoid clothing with writing, logos, or busy patterns. The more natural, the better.
4. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Instead of everyone in the same color, vary tones within your chosen palette. For example:
Mom in a cream dress
Dad in a light taupe or gray shirt
Sibling in a soft beige romper
Baby in an ivory wrap
This keeps the look visually balanced and connected, while still allowing individuality.
5. Keep It Classic
The beauty of studio portraits is in their simplicity. Let your styling reflect that. Avoid loud colors or trendy patterns—choose pieces that will feel elegant and timeless when you look back years from now.
MOMS
First and foremost, moms should wear something that makes them feel beautiful and comfortable. Moms, say yes to the dress! Dresses look stunning and flatter every body type. I recommend dresses from Baltic Born, Pink Blush, Shein and even Amazon.
Flowy and textured fabrics are flattering: plus, the movement in the fabric adds a feminine touch. An A-line dress is an ideal newborn photoshoot outfit for new moms. You don’t want anything clingy since you are postpartum and want the most comfortable clothing as possible. If you’re exclusively breastfeeding, purchase a dress that is easy to nurse in without having to change mid-shoot. Flowy maxi dresses that are nursing-friendly are where it’s at they’re comfortable, beautiful and won’t cling to your body. If your personal style leans more towards denim jeans and a top, then by all means do that! The most important thing for a family photo shoot is to feel comfortable and reflect your personality. I know sometimes when postpartum moms hear the word jeans, they think uncomfortable. But you can still wear your maternity jeans as you heal. Newborn portraits are not full body so you don't need to worry about the bottom half of your body as much, we'll be focusing on the baby and sweet holding poses.
COLORS
Now let’s talk about the colors and textures. Ideally, you want each family member to wear a different color or shade of the same color you've chosen. However, they should look cohesive and be a similar color palette so they photograph well together, starting with a neutral palette. My go to's are light-colored wardrobes in creams, light grays, beige, even throw some pastels in there. Orrr you can go on the dark side and do some browns (my faveeee color) or blacks. These are always a signature staple for some timeless newborn portraits helps in keeping the focus on expressions and the moment. If you’re going for a pop of print in your newborn photoshoot, choose one person to wear the print.
Stone & Bone
For timeless newborn family portraits, grey and white outfits create a serene, elegant palette that never goes out of style. Soft heather greys, crisp whites, and cozy knits blend beautifully, letting your family’s connection and baby’s features shine. These neutral tones complement any backdrop and add a modern, airy feel to your images—perfect for capturing those first precious moments with subtle sophistication. Great with darker background to focus on the subjects.
Black and Bold (Dramatic & Modern)
Black and Bold Outfits for Newborn Portraits create a striking, timeless aesthetic that beautifully contrasts the softness and delicacy of a new baby.
