Before your Session

I recommend starting your day just like any other, everything as normal as possible, I feel like keeping your regular rhythm going works best for the preparation for our session.

When getting your baby ready to leave the house please dress your baby in a zipper pj outfit, no onesies under or cute 3 piece outfits lol. As cute as they look they aren't so helpful when trying to get baby undressed, wrapped and posed all while trying to keep baby asleep. Staying on your regular feeding schedule helps me plan our session based on baby's regular schedule.

As far as getting yourself ready incase you're also doing family portraits. I always recommend dressing comfortable, light and coordinated outfits for family photos, neutral colors always work best. If you need assistance with outfits for your newborn family portraits check out my other Blog Post "How to Style your family for your newborn Portraits".

My most important advice would be to dress light  as the studio will be very warm to keep baby as relaxed and comfortable.

Preparing for a studio newborn session involves more than just showing up with your baby. By bringing these essential items, you'll help create a comfortable and enjoyable environment, ensuring that your newborn's first photo shoot is a memorable and heartwarming experience for everyone involved.

During your session

Once you arrive you are hands off, I will take care of baby as the session rolls through I can feed and change baby as he/she needs their breaks. Unless of course mom is breastfeeding or enjoys the bonding of eat eat time that is totally fine. I will ask a few questions in regard to baby's last meal, poop, colic,  etc. upon arrival and go from there.

I always let parents know ahead of time I am a baby lead photographer so whatever baby says goes, as silly as that sounds. They might not speak and tell us word for word but they do show it with body language. Most sessions take me about 2-3 hours, I have had  a few instances where we've hit that 4 hours mark. Now that doesn't mean you're going to be there for 4 hours lol those have been more on the extreme side where baby has been fussy and won't settle, but again if you want those dreamy pictures a little patience can go a long way. I don't necessarily have a solid "script" or order to start, it all just depends on how baby arrives, if he's awake and alert or sleepy, etc.

If siblings are joining the picture I like to get them within those first 30 mins just because I know once they're done, they are DONE. I always advise parents not to have high expectations when it comes to siblings posing with the infant. We all want those dreamy pictures with all our kiddos together, but sometimes it doesn't always work out that way and that's ok. My go to poses are siblings laying on my flokati rug of those younger ones.  Another pose if the older siblings are independent enough to hold baby I like have them sit down as well.  When doing  family shots I aim to get those in the beginning as well just after those sibling shots.

When arriving with toddlers and young kids I always advise parents to have your significant other or grandparents take kiddos once they're done with their part of the session just because I know how jittery the kids can get and my studio garage is not big. I do have some activities, coloring books and reading books to keep them busy for some time but I know eventually that time happens to expire when you're in there for 2-4 hours.

You're more then welcome to bring snacks for yourself and the kiddos if it so happens to be around breakfast or lunch time, I have no problem with outside food and drinks. I have a small seating area so you will be comfortable to sit and hangout with us and take some behind the scenes videos. I LOVE when clients are able to get their own BTS, please feel free to send them to me!

Don't be surprised if baby magically is eating twice of what they usually do at home. It's normal and totally to be expected. With all the work they're doing they're bound to create such a big appetite lol. Being a model can be hard lol so don't stress when baby has had 3 bottles in 3 hours. I always make sure to burp baby and keep them in upright positions for a full belly to avoid any kind of reflux, spit up or unneeded gas.

FAQ

A list of the most common questions to prepare you even more.

How and when do we contact you?

The best way to reach me would be to submit a contact form through my website with all the info and details you have planned for your project. I always recommend to book your newborn session sometime in your third trimester. What I do is I block off dates for the week you're due and the week after. Booking ahead of time makes sure your date is secured ahead of time. Now I know birth can be planned and some times mom just goes with the flow, regardless I'm ready whenever you are.

How old should baby be for their session

I love photographing infants at those early stages of life Although those first 16 days are great to get those nude classic poses, I never rush parents into the studio. As a mom of four I know sometimes it takes a little longer to adjust to a bigger size family and that is totally okay. I'm more than comfortable capturing infants at any stage. Just keep in mind the older your baby is the more alert he/she will be so some of those nude shots might be a bit harder to capture but we can always give it a shots, it's not impossible. Just keep me updated on how you're feeling and healing and we can play it by ear as far as solidifying a date.

Where does the session take place?

As a small business owner I currently work out of a Garage Studio near my home in Ridgeland, SC OR Studio 16 in Bluffton SC, final address will be discussed upon booking.

Do you have studio rules?

I am a very laid back person and don't necessarily have a set rule book but I do have a few that help me work best

1.) Animals are welcome but can only stay for the initial 20 mins of the session where they will participate. Owner must arrange for someone to pick fur baby up,

2.) Max 2 extra guests  or Immediate Family ONLY for any studio sessions; for milestones/ cake smashes grandparents/ siblings are welcome
