What to Expect & How to Prepare for Your Portrait or Birthday Studio Session

Studio portrait and birthday sessions are such a fun and meaningful way to capture milestones, personalities, and special moments in a clean, timeless setting. Whether you're celebrating a birthday, documenting your child’s growth, or simply updating family portraits, a little preparation can help make your session smooth, relaxed, and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Planning Your Session

Before your session, we will discuss the vision you have in mind. This can include colors, outfits, themes, and any inspiration photos you may have seen. Planning ahead allows me to create a setup that reflects your style while still keeping the overall look timeless.

Even simple sessions require preparation. Props, lighting, backgrounds, and equipment are thoughtfully arranged ahead of time to ensure everything is ready for your arrival and your session runs smoothly.

If you have any changes you would like to make to your concept, outfits, or overall vision, please communicate those at least 7 days before your session date. This allows time to adjust the setup and ensure I have the proper materials or equipment needed. Requests made after that timeframe may be possible, but they will depend on availability and whether the proper resources are already available.

Portrait and birthday sessions take place at Studio 16, a beautiful natural light studio that is reserved specifically for your session.

Because the studio is rented by the hour, time is extremely important in order to provide every client with the full experience they deserve.

Please keep the following in mind when planning your arrival:

  • Please arrive no more than 5 minutes early, as the studio may still be occupied or being prepared.
  • Please arrive no later than 15 minutes after your scheduled session time.
  • Clients arriving 15–30 minutes late will incur a late fee, and session time may be shortened accordingly.
  • If arrival is more than 30 minutes late, the session will be cancelled, and a new retainer fee will be required to reschedule.

Arriving on time helps ensure we can fully focus on capturing your session without feeling rushed.

What to Wear

Wardrobe plays an important role in how your portraits come together. Neutral colors, soft textures, and simple patterns tend to photograph beautifully in a studio setting. Avoid clothing with large logos or very busy patterns that may take attention away from the subject.

Depending on the package you select, you may be able to bring additional outfits to change into during your session. Outfit changes can be done at the studio as the session progresses.

However, all clients must arrive already dressed and photo-ready. Hair, makeup, and your first outfit should be fully completed before arriving at the studio. Because of the limited studio rental time, there is no time built into sessions for getting ready, doing hair or makeup, or preparing outfits.

Any additional outfit changes will be done during the session itself, allowing us to move smoothly through your scheduled time while capturing a variety of looks.

Preparing Your Child

If your session includes children, a little preparation can help the experience go much more smoothly.

Try to schedule around nap times so your child is well rested.

Bring small snacks or drinks if needed for younger children.

Talk about the session in a positive and excited way beforehand so they feel comfortable and prepared.

Children don’t need to pose perfectly — some of the best photos come from natural laughter, curiosity, and genuine moments.

DUring The Session

Sessions are designed to feel relaxed and enjoyable. I will guide you through poses and prompts while also allowing natural moments to happen. My goal is to create an environment where you feel comfortable and can simply enjoy the experience while I capture the moments unfolding.

Birthday sessions often include a mix of portraits and playful images so you leave with a gallery full of personality and joy.
After Your session

After your session, your images will be carefully selected and professionally edited. Editing includes refining lighting and color, enhancing the overall artistic feel of the photographs, and removing small temporary blemishes when necessary.
My editing approach focuses on enhancing your images while keeping you looking natural and authentic.
